Sutan Sharir Founder Socialist Party of Indonesia

It was named the Socialist Party of Indonesia (PSI). Despite its small size, the Sharira party had a significant influence on Indonesian politics, primarily due to the good education received by its leaders.
Sutan Sharir (1909 - 1966) - Indonesian politician, socialist, national hero of Indonesia. First Prime Minister of Indonesia.

In 1929, Sharir went to the Netherlands for education; he studied law at the Amsterdam and Leiden universities. For some time was the secretary of the Indonesian Association - the organization of Indonesian students in the Netherlands.

In 1931, he returned to Indonesia, where he participated in the creation of the Indonesian National Party. In a short time, Sharir's authority increased significantly - he became an independent leader of the liberation movement.

In November 1934, Sharir was arrested by the Dutch for nationalistic activities; first they served their sentence on the river Digul, then on the Banda islands, finally, in 1941, shortly before the Japanese attack on the Dutch East Indies, they were transferred to the city of Sukabumi.

During the Japanese occupation, Sharir hardly ever took part in the public life of Indonesia because he suffered from tuberculosis. However, he was one of the few Indonesian leaders who refused to cooperate with the invaders and started an underground liberation struggle.

In November 1945, Sharir was appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Indonesia. During the war for independence, he was respected by the Dutch, because he did not cooperate with the Japanese during the occupation. In 1947, he was forced to leave the post of prime minister.

In 1948 he founded a new party. It was named the Socialist Party of Indonesia (PSI). Despite its small size, the Sharira party had a significant influence on Indonesian politics, primarily due to the good education received by its leaders.

In the 1955 elections, the party was defeated, receiving only 2% of the votes, primarily because the program written by Sharir in the spirit of social democracy was difficult for the public to perceive. In 1960, for participation in the putsch in 1958, the Socialist Party of Indonesia was banned.

In 1962, Sharir was arrested without trial for participating in an alleged anti-government plot. During his imprisonment in 1965, he suffered a stroke, as a result of which he lost the ability to speak. Died Sutan Sharir in 1966 in Zurich, where he left for treatment.
